Simple question: What size nails are usually used for normal 2X4 stud wall framing?

I can't find a recommendation anywhere on the net, interestingly enough.

I have always used 16D cement-coated (CC) sinkers, but I believe I once heard something about 12D being okay. Overall, the nails in framing often do little more than to hold things in place until sheathing has been attached.

I believe nail sizing is actually spec'd in the building codes, but I can't quote it to you. Someone will probably know. Stay tuned/

I know down here in Southern California where we are expecting the "big one" any day now, size AND spacing of nails is very much an issue. I have seen inspectors fail a plywood shear panel for not enough nails!

Depends on where you are and what your governing code is.

Typical is:

Stud to sole plate, toe nail 3-8d or 2-16d

Top or sole plate to stud, end nail 2-16d

2- 16d x .162 or the 3- 8d x .131

Pay attention to the diameter. Shank size is as important as length.
