Moen Stop Tube Won't Budge

I'm trying to replace the cartridge in my Moen shower faucet. To remove the brass retaining clip, I need to remove the Stop Tube. Everything I've seen and read says this tube should just slide off. It wont budge: I've pulled and tapped and no sign of motion. Am I missing something?

The stop tube should slide off. Sometimes pliers will help to grip it. Or perhaps removing the escutcheon first.
