1. Consider sanitizing your well and plumbing. Even sanitize your softener in a controlled manner. Long and strong bleach can damage softener resin. A proper amount can kill organisms without damaging the resin. Strong chlorine is good in sanitizing pipes and wells.

2. Some organisms grow better with light. If your softener is in the sun, try covering it with a light-stopping cover.
