It sounds silly but I read online that on a well that doesn't have a pump (mine), dropping a rock or ice cube down the well and timing how long it takes before it hits water can tell you how deep the water is.

2 seconds = 42 feet
3 seconds = 111 feet
4 seconds = 212 feet
5 seconds = 345 feet

The above takes into account air resistance.

I tried it but it kept hitting the side of the PVC casing so that throws off the timing. I got around 5 seconds.

How else can one measure the water depth? Lowering a rope with a small weight?

You would probably never feel a small weight hit.

I have 2 Eno Scientific and 2 Ravensgate well sounders. They send a pulse down the well that bounces off the water. The pulse returns and the machine calculates the depth.

Hey, wait a minute.

This is awkward, but...
