mark 89 seal pack removal

Hi I have a mark 89 and I'm having trouble removing the seal pack it seems to only come out about an inch before I can't pull it any more any advice? I don't want it to break off inside how hard do I have to pull it?

Now there is going to be a war but my favorite that I have used for years is with the valve off the tank for the start. Then take out the end plug and then a 1" socket and use it to drive the seal pack assembly out the front of the unit. It has worked over the years.
