It's about a dozen years old and it's running long past when it should have stopped after it's flushed. It has no flapper, it's a plunger design. How do you diagnose and repair?

Hey Terry, thanks for your reply. I don't think I described the problem very well. The toilet was running continuously and was a fill valve issue that I corrected by bending the float arm. But recently it began to run intermittently, so I gave your flush valve seal replacement a try. Unfortunately, it now leaks intermittently worse than with the old seal. Maybe I used the wrong part? I used a Lowe's Reliabilt that says Mansfield #210 & #211 that seemed to be the exact same diameter as the old one. Although the old one after 15 years had sort of become 3-dimensional, if you know what I mean.

You can change out the flush valve with either a Korky or a Fluidmaster.
And make sure that the fill tube is down far into the overflow tube. With a Korky or Fluidmaster overflow, they give you a clip to keep it higher than the top so that you don't siphon water from the tank back into the bowl.
