New homeowner of a (not new) well.

Looking to increase flow rate to facilitate proper backwashing of water treatment media. I tested & calculated following method found online by water treatment professionals and found 3.5GPM was my flow rate (home inspector said 3GPM). My pump is not submersible, it's a 1/2hp jet pump on top of a 20gallon horizontal pressure tank.

I was told by someone who grew up in the house 2 owners ago that the well is an artesian well and that they had to put a run-off pipe in running out to road gulley/culvert because well was overflowing. He said "you'll never run out of water here". My thought process is that if there is more than enough supply, I should be able to install a larger pressure tank and a more powerful jet pump to increase my GPM, correct?

I'm the process of looking for a local well company for consulting, but in the meantime, what information should I be looking for from the well specialist when I do find one?

Thanks

I tried looking for the runoff pipe but it must be covered by vegetation. The road is a hill and water is always running down the gulley, probably due to the high amount of rain this year.

Thanks

3.5 GPM is more than 5,000 gallons per day. You just can't use it faster than 3.5 GPM. A shallow well isn't deep enough to be of any good for water storage. So you probably need to get a 1000-1500 gallon storage tank to fill at 3.5 GPM. Then you can get as large a pump as you want to pump out of the storage tank. Here is a drawing of how it can be set up. Note that this has a sub in the well and a jet pump booster. But it could just as easily have a jet pump in the well and a sub in the storage tank, or it can be done with two jet pumps as well.
