After using the shower or flushing the toilet in the basement, shortly after/throughout there is a loud bang in the wall between that bathroom and the furnace room. Is this the pump pumping water up? Is it normal? It's quite loud and can be heard throughout the rest of the house. TIA

It happens to some, and it can probably be cured.
  1. Do you have a submersible pump?
  2. Do you get the bang when the pump starts?

From the description, it sounds like the OP has a sewage basin and the noise is likely to be the check valve slamming shut at the end of a cycle.
If this is the case, the problem can be fixed by replacing the check valve with one that is designed to be silent.

Could also be the check valve on the well pump sticking, which will slam when the well pump stops. See if it is happening when the well pump shuts off.
