The drain line in the first floor room where I am placing a washing machine runs almost parallel and only a couple of inches off the floor. There is, therefore, no room to place the P Trap 6" above the floor with a properly installed Y fitting. Any suggestions ?? I have no problem cutting a hole in the floor to provide the space for the P Trap. Is there a reason why that would not be acceptable ??

The answer to the question you did not ask is that you CANNOT just put a "Y" in the drain line and connect a trap to it. When you install the the trap correctly, it WILL BE more than 6" above the floor
