Hello! I moved into a new home (built in 1987) in July 2024. In October we renovated a secondary bathroom in our upstairs hallway. Gutted it to the studs and replaced all fixtures but main pipes were left intact with the exception of I believe copper pipes were replaced with a different material near the shower connection.
Anyway my kids have used this bath tub about 50 times since then and no issues until last night when about 45 minutes after draining the tub we noticed downstairs that the floor/rug below the bathroom was soaked and a recently added recessed LED light in our family room appeared damaged/discolored and was wet.
I removed and disconnected the LED light and some more water came out of the ceiling. Some of the insulation in the ceiling was wet but the insulation around the drain pipe didn’t feel wet. I was as looking inside the ceiling through the small circular hole when my holding on to the drywall caused it to crumble so I removed the badly damaged drywall. Feeling inside didn’t feel terribly wet but the pipes definitely didn’t feel wet.
What’s the likely cause of this and why would something happen after several months of use?
Is it possible the electrical work that was recently done about 4 weeks ago could have caused this due to heat?
I’ve attached some photos of the hole. To the left of the hole when looking from the ground is the drain pipe from the bathtub. Directly above the hole is the toilet drain and to the right of the hole is where the sink is. The sink needed some plumbing relocated, but I don’t think that was the cause.
Contractor is scheduled to return tomorrow but wondering if I should get my usual plumber out.
Thanks so much!
