My kitchen originally had a side by side sink with a garbage disposal on one side obviously. We changed the sink to a single basin sink and the garbage disposal still installed. I find the sink tends to drain extremely slow sometimes and I have to run the garbage disposal in order for it to drain. The dishwasher is connected to the garbage disposal as well as it should be but we do not have an air gap installed. Do I require an Air Gap in order for it to work properly or is there something else I'm missing.

No air gap. You probably mean vent. A vent problem alone will not cause slow draining.

What you should try is to push one of the flaps down on the rubber splash guard, to admit air, to see if that lets the water drop in. Alternatively, temporarily remove the splash guard for testing.

Remove the trap and clean it. If it still drains slow, the drain line is clogged. I have to go under my house once a year and flush the food waste out of my kitchen sink drain with a garden hose.

I removed all pipes they are all clean. The drain is fine. When the sink was side by side sink it drained fine. Only when it became a single basin sink did it start draining slow.

Splash guard?

Another test: stopper the sink and fill the bowl. Unstopper. How does that drain? Faster or slowly.
