Is there a definitive way to determine if your resin in your tanks is bad other than just hooking it up and running it?
The unit is only 9 years old but did not have a pre-filter and was exposed to lots of iron.

Kinetico uses Dow resin so it's probably still good. If it is working properly mechanically and putting out soft water no need to change it.

Define 'lots' of iron. What are the iron, manganese, hardness & pH amounts?

A full resin cleaning using Iron-Out, Citric Acid or similar may eliminate iron fouling so as to restore much of the resin's softening capacity.
