K-87115 arm of lever blocked by top

I installed the Kohler 87115 but when flushing it, the arm of the lever exceeds the height of bowl and with the top cover on it- the cover prevents it from being able to flush. Can anyone help advise what can be done?See here

The chain linkage needs to be adjusted. There should be very little slack between the flapper and the trip lever rod.

This is awkward, but...
