Hey all,

Got banging pipes during acid neutralizer backwash when flow switches from backwash to rinse.

Specifics,
I installed a 52x12" neutralizer tank with a Fleck 5810SXT followed by a Fleck water softener all on 1" pipe.
The size of the tank and amount of calcite dictated a large flow rate during backwash. I'm able to get about 8 GPM through 3/4" PVC during backwash. Problem is, when the SXT switches from backwash to rinse, there is a surging in the 1" copper pipe and a banging between the 1st and second floor.

Question, would a hammer arrestor do the trick. If so, how big? What do you guys think? Don't want to be buying stuff until I hear from you. Dan

I would recommend a simple thermal expansion tank. Common, cheap, reliable, and basically a hammer arrestor on steroids.
