I have a Kinetico dual unit water softener that is 22 years old. I've been in this house and used it for 15 months. I had someone come out today and its tank(s) have blown; there's residue in my toilet tank from it. It would cost me $1800 to repair it but only a three month warranty. I can't afford to buy a new Kinetico. They did gave me a quote for a reconditioned Kinetico dual tank softener 60 size with trade-in of my old for $4,722.00 installed. The new one would include a pre-filter that my current one doesn't have and a 5 year parts 1 year labor warranty.
I'm wondering if a refurbished Kinetico is worth the cost. The sales person said the difference between a repaired system and a refurbished one is that a refurbished one essentially has all new parts in it and just has a used tank. They are refurbished by Aquarius, the Kinetico dealer, rather than at Kinetico itself. The sales person said this should last 15 years; could potentially need some repair in that time.
Outside of that I could purchase a water softener from Centerpoint Energy for $1881 installed with a 7 year parts 1 year labor. It's the Home Service Plus brand which is a Canature brand, which I've never heard of or a Brassmaster for $2300 to 3500 5 year parts 5 year labor. My plumber has $2900 budget or $3763 premium option (recommended for our bad hard water) options as well. I'm not sure the brand. All would be remove old/install new.
I know there's a lot of hand wavyness in the last paragraph. I just never do refurbished anything so am not sure if this is a time I should consider it.
Oh, the Kinetico sales person also said the Kinetico brand also uses much less water and salt in its dual systems as well vs their one tank system. I'm not sure if that would carry over to other brands or not.
Then there's the option of renting from Kinetico for $40/month...
