I installed Runtal radiators on a standard boiler about 2 years ago. I noticed that the Uponor heat-pex turned black within a year. I didn't think much of it.
This morning I was watching a YouTube video of a service call and noted a filter that I was unaware existed. It's a magnetic iron filter. To avoid future sludge and clogged pex, is it standard practice to have one of these in line?
TIA

I had a discussion with the plumber/YouTube content provider. He explained that an iron filter is really not necessary with a traditional boiler. It's more-so applicable to combi units. Just an FYI, if someone else lands here from a google search.

Boiler water turns black with oxygen. Oxygen comes in with fresh make up water. Have you had multiple leaks? What are you using for air removal? Flush boiler at 100° or less at the drain valve with fire and pumps off use a hose right into floor drain the black will stain the floor. Also suggest a boiler treatment that has a oxygen scavenger. Quart is good for 25 gallons.

The boiler is about 18 years old and never had a leak. I redid the second floor and added Runtal radiators with the Uponor manifold to it about 2 years ago. I noticed through the pex that it had darkened inside. I thought it was from the newly added water and iron radiators and once the O2 from the water was depleted with use, it would stop. For air scrubbing, there is a Taco air scoop.
Perhaps, I'm making more of this than needed. I just want to make sure that I didn't create a future problem and if I did get it fixed before it becomes a problem.

Your water is still in good shape didn't say that it had a strong odor. Put a quart of treatment in the system call it good. If you can valve off a cool boiler can drain some water to relieve pressure pull the relief valve pour it in.
