I've searched the forums here but some of the answers to my questions seem to be more technical than I can interpret. I have two questions regarding my Fleck 5600 sxt 32k Iron Pro water softener. We have had the unit for a little over a year and are generally happy with it. Two questions are:

1) We had problems with iron, manganese, and iron bacteria that showed up after an earthquake. We use Morton Rust Defense or similar salts which took care of the post-earthquake iron bacteria problem. My question is, should I also be using Iron Out or a similar product once a year to help clean the resin or is the Morton Rust Defense salt enough?

2) I have no idea how to determine how much salt we should be using. Since installation, we've been using the pre-set manufacturer regeneration cycle and salt settings. It seems like we're using a lot of salt though I haven't kept track all that well. How much salt should I be using or how do I determine how much salt I should be using?

The water test results below are from a reputable lab and are the results from BEFORE we installed the Iron Pro.

Water testing results

Total Hardness -- 9.9 GPG
Calcium -- 52 ppm
Iron -- .47 ppm
Manganese -- .49 ppm
Magnesium -- 8.7 ppm
Langlier Index -- .11
Alkalinity -- 97 mg/L
pH -- 7.84
Total Dissolved Solids -- 221 mg/

Thank you very much for any thoughts or advice.

You might check the injector and injector screen. If iron is accumulated, you might use some IO and/or clean the softener.\
Presuming a fairly regular softener, I would consider these settings, but change RC appropriately.

System info (not programmed)
salt lb/cuft = 7.5 ; A choice ( efficiency vs capacity)
BLFC = 0.5 ; Brine Refill rate GPM (you could check this)
cubic ft resin = 1 ; ft3 resin = (nominal grains)/32,000
Compensated hardness = 15 ; including any compensation
People = 3 ; gallons affects reserve calc
Estimated gal/day = 180 ; 60 gal per person typical calc
Estimated days/regen = 8.89 ; Computed days including reserve

Fleck 5600SXT Settings:
DF = Gal ; Units
VT = dF1b ; Downflw/, Single Backwash, black cam
CT = Fd ; Meter Delayed regen trigger
NT = 1 ; Number of tanks
C = 23.0 ; capacity in 1000 grains
H = 15 ; Hardness-- compensate if needed
RS = rc ; rc says use gallons vs percent
RC = 180 ; Reserve capacity gallons (60 gallons/person)
DO = 14 ; Day Override (28 if no iron)
RT = 2:00 ; Regen time (default 2 AM)
BW = 5 ; Backwash (minutes)
Bd = 60 ; Brine draw minutes
RR = 5 ; Rapid Rinse minutes
BF = 5 ; Brine fill minutes
FM = ____0.7 ; https://terrylove.com/forums/index.php?attachments/img_fleck5600sxt_flow-png.31592/
