I'm installing a kohler k-304 pressure balance valve in a shower and there are no holes to mount it to a cross brace. In the past, I've screwed the valve unit to the cross brace to support it during install.

Kohler says that the piping will hold it in place and then the face plate will provide more support. I'm a bit skeptical, not to mention that is seems to be difficult to hold it up while attaching the lines.

Anyone dealt with these and have any advice? Thanks.

I agree with Kohler.
You should be able to secure the valve on the copper pipes leading into the valve body.

I like to solder up the valve with the shower vertical, and then hang it from the drop ear first.
Bracing it in solid before I start connecting to the other pipes.
