Installing a recirculation pump

I'm not a plumber, but I recently installed a recirc pump by Watts. The kind I installed requires no return line to the water heater, so I didn't have to drain the tank. But the more elaborate recirc systems require a return pipe, and you would have to empty the tank I'm order to arrange for connecting the return pipe. That's how I understand it.
