I can (A) mount the tubing outside the wall, enclosed in a soffit; or (B) remove drywall and drill 1.2" diameter holes through the king and cripple studs. It would certainly look better without the soffit, but I'm more concerned about inspection.
The door/wall run parallel to the joists, so is probably non load-bearing wall. FOR IRC, state is CT.
ChatGPT and Gemini indicated drilling through the king stud was okay as long as I follow the usual caveats for drilling studs.
