Anyone know if it's ok to install a bathtub over a ceramic tile floor...by this I mean extend the tile underneath the bathtub skirt...or will this just cause the tiles to break when someone steps into the tub and the skirt bears down on the tile?

thx

tub

it is easier for the tiler and it eliminates the gap between the tile and tub which is always a potential leak source when the grout cracks or pulls away from the tub. Unless the tub is very poorly installed no damage to the tile will occur.

It is O.K. If the tile goes all the way under the tub to the wall or the tub is set in mud to level it with the tile floor if the floor does not go all the way to the wall.

If the tub is set on the floor and the tile only goes a few inches under the skirt the tub will not be level.

We tiled up to an existing tub in one bathroom, used a sanded grout-color-matched caulk in the seam next to the tub. Provides some flexibility, so theoretically it won't crack and leak. In the all-new master bath we tiled right up to the walls everywhere.

Most tubs have to be leveled anyway, regardless of what the floor looks like.

What's under the tile?

The supporting subfloor is more important than the tile -- if it flexes too much, you might have grout (and tile) cracking with the weight of the water-filled tub.
