I wanted to install an new electrical out let this is what the old one looks like is it wired correctly

1. how do I replace this functionally and also to conform to code?
2. how can I replace this with a new outlet to work as this one did?
3. what is going on with this wiring?
4. something else?

AFAIK code requires that they be daisy-chained with wirenuts, not on the outlet as shown.

No problem the way it is wired, although the wires look a bit large for a "push in" connector, and may not work that way with your new one.

According to the following thread, it is not a NEC requirement but it is considered best practice. My understanding is the NEC is a fallback and local codes may vary.
