On the left is the new resin. On the right is the resin that came out of the softener.

I was almost finished when I hit a snag. I stripped the plastic female end where the brine hose connects to the head on top of the tank.

I have 3 questions -
What are the chances that I fixed my problem with the iron smell in my water based on the condition of the old resin?
Can I buy just the female thread part of the fleck 5600sxt or do I have to buy a new unit?
Is it alright to bypass the water softener and just use the acid neutralizer and the iron filter?

Look at the service manual pages 12 and 13. I think you are describing Fleck part 13163.

I am not a pro.

1. Resin comes in different colors. So I don't know.
2. I see Fleck part 13163 offered.
3. You mean until you get the softener fixed? I think that should be OK.
