How to restart softener that has been off for extended time.

What should be done to a softener that has been out of service for 6-8 years? Just clean the brine tank, flush the resin bed and run some cleaner through it and flush again or something more?

you will want to sanitize the resin. considering how long it has been sitting I would recommend doing a serious sanitizing. Add 1/4 cup of household unscented bleach to the brine tank and run it through a regeneration. After that run it through a second and even a third regeneration. After that test it, you should be ok.
