Wife lost an earring down the shower drain. Somewhere under the floor is a drum trap where this has been caught (I hope). Is there any way of retrieving the earring without performing surgery on the house?

You can try using a wet vac.

Plug one of the two openings on the tub drain and use the vac on the other one.

You have a very small chance of finding it.
Most traps let stuff go right through them.

trap

If it is really a drum trap, then you remove the cover from it and then either use a wet vac, or run water in the tub to flush it out, depending on whether the trap is upright or inverted.
