Hello all,
I just had a new Kinetico Powerline PRO PF 1054 AIO iron filter installed. I was still getting a minor 10 second blast of sulfur smell from my cold taps in the house (not the hot ones, i.e. water heater rod is OK). It was installed before a new Hague Water Max softener.
My readings before the AIO were:
PH 7.2
Calcium hardness 210
Alk 300

I noticed I no longer have bubbles in the shower and the water felt....sticky so I tested again to find:
PH 10 +/- (off the scale of the test I am using)
Calcium hardness now zero or as close to zero as the test allows
Alk 90

My concern is doesn't the high PH effect the softener and how well it functions and what is this new concoction doing to my copper pipes.
Any insight into this is greatly appreciated!
Ben

pH rise above 10 can occur with a new water treatment system. pH can act like electricity... ie: voltage, amperage etc. By adding hydrogen to the water a very high pH reading can be achieved but the water will have no amperage. Sorry for the bad analogy but consider a static shock from rubbing your socks on the carpet, this produces a 3000 volt electric shock, but without amperage it is harmless. pH can be similar as a very high or low reading may be harmless. It is far more complex than my bad description but I think you get the point.

Thank you for responding and yes I understand. Is having a PH as high as I do along with the ALK being 90 harmful for the copper pipes? I had Kinetico come out today and verify what I was reading. They determined it was the Hague system that was causing the issue. (Just like you said). The only thing now is the softener was set up with the old numbers of 3 iron and 30 hardness. After testing the water today I now have .5 iron and 20 hardness going into the softener. I now need to have those adjusted to the new numbers. I am hoping the PH will lower a tad if the softener isn't working as hard and perhaps, even have bubbles from the soap in the shower. Is this assumption correct?
