Help removing shower diverted

Im trying to replace my shower diverter. When we use the shower, the water splits between the tub spout and the shower head. I can't figure out how to remove this diverter though. The hex nut on it is very thin and is hard to grasp with a socket or pliers. I'm afraid if I keep trying it'll just continue to strip. I included pictures below
