I am replacing a tub and have opened a can of worms in the process. This is all pre-existing work, so I am not looking to redo it at this point, however I'd to keep water out of that vent line. When I cut it open, it had water inside, and it has no place to go, since the vent line simply goes up and through the roof about 10 feet downstream. Before I touched this, it was simply connected together with a very small bend, not enough to stop much flow.

A vent must be pitched towards the fixture drain and is never allowed to be run horizontally below the flood rim of the fixture. Without a better understanding of what you have there, advice may be hard to come by.

Here is a photo of what was previously connecting these two lines together:

And a photo of the lines inside the joist:

I'd to keep water out of that vent line.
Then make sure the vent does not go horizontal until 6" above the flood level of the drain being serviced. Any horizontal runs of the vent should be pitched back so that any water accumulating inside the vent drains back toward the drain.

? Whatever it is you're trying to show there, that pipe you have marked as "vent" is not a vent, at least
not for the bathtub drain, and it can not be used as such. No vent should have standing water in it.

And WHAT could he do with that mess. We are not "miracle workers", and have to at least have SOMETHING legal to start with, or at least a chance of making it legal, which that picture implies is impossible.

Kind of what I was thinking. :)
