I was an idiot and used a mixture of CLR and vinegar to clean my water heater. I let it sit for approximately six hours. Gas 40 gallon water heater.

I then drained the heater, and pulsed water to flush. I have since fully drained and pulsed again to flush. Ran faucets extensively.

I cannot seem to get the CLR smell out of the hot water, it is much better than initially but it is not perfect.

Is this just a matter of more flushing? Or any other tips?

I poured the mixture in through the hot water outlet, removed mixing valve, then poured into that pipe. As an aside, I also soaked the mixing valve in CLR for some time, and rinsed with water not sure if this is also the cuase.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
