I'm a Canadian tradesperson in the planning stages of building a house in Mexico. I want to install a grey water system and would appreciate some advice. I plan on draining both showers in the house to a filter, then on to a cistern, and then it would be pumped to three toilets and the backyard irrigation system.

Can I simply create a filter by filling a tank with a layer of rock and a layer of sand? What calculations should I do to determine the size of the filter tank, cistern, and pump? Do I need a specific type of pump since the water will be contaminated?
