My 14-year-old GE dishwasher, Model GLD5560L00SS, has been leaving a little residue on dishes. Poking around, I found that the top pipe in the sump inlet had somewhat disintegrated. I'm speaking of the pipe that sticks through the coarse filter on the base of the dishwasher. (Here is a picture of a healthy pipe, and here is a picture of my corroded pipe.)
I'll replace the sump inlet. But I would like to know: what does this top pipe do, and could it be responsible for the residue on my dishes? I don't understand its function in the dishwasher.
And—are all sump inlets made of rubber, or just those in relatively low-end dishwashers?
