I have a 14 years old Carrier Dual Stage furnace.

For the longest time, we used the most restricted air filter. About 3-4 years ago, the furnace start to short cycle (ie when the 2nd stage kicks in, it shuts down within a minute). Replacing with less restrictive filter helps.

This happens again about 4 months ago....so I am down to the least restricted filter.

My question is what could have cause this?.....I suspect the evaporator coil might be dirty causing restricted air flow. As it is hard to get to the coils, I want to know if there are any other things I should look into?

Even though filters were changed the blower wheel cups can be dirty and it doesn't take a whole lot of drt to effect performance. Pull blower, pull motor take housing and wheel outside clean with a garden hose and dish soap. While blower is out some furnaces with a flash lite can see the ac coil to inspect it.
