Frustrating Moen 1222 cartridge issue

Hi,
I've installed a new moen 1222 cartridge since the only one was dripping and corroded which was a nightmare getting out piece-by-piece, the new one I installed works fine when it's in the off position no dripping but I noticed the tub spout is still dripping, now when I turn it on the cartridge starts leaking out and when I pull the tub spout diverter it starts leaking even more to the point it looks like the water pressure is going through the side of the cartridge side, I've already bought two and I'm stumped as to what the issue is, I'm thinking it's the Inside of the pipe that is wrong but I don't want to get into that if I'm not sure

Any ideas as to what the problem is? Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Caliper the old and the new to see if they are the same size. I once ran into a size issue with a 1248 cartridge.
