we got a new house after the older one garage burned down and they tore down the house. the new house has pex plumbing, the old house had copper. when we first moved in i thought the water tasted a bit bad. i thought maybe the pex was putting a taste in the water, some said no. we have been drinking the water now for 6 months. so today the fridge gave me a change the filter. i found out that if i take the filter out it still gave water and ice. so i reset the error and kept going. so tonight i got a glass of ice water and it tasted like shit. so why did the water from the fridge seem to be ok to drink and then just after taking the filter out it now tastes so bad. the wter from the sink does not have that same taste as we drink it all day long with coffee, and meds. so can anyone tell me why just removing the fridge filter cause that. the water has been going thru the same lines now for maybe 6 months with out issues. i just can't believe the taste would just happen when taking the filter out. this fridge seems to go into filter bypass if the filter is taken out so you at least have water the fridge is a whilrpool with a i filter Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter 1 - WHR1RXD1

Water valve has a screen on the inlet. Probably has a fitting from the 1/4" tubing to a garden hose connection. Tubing is held either by a compresion or push to connect where their is a ring next to the tubing that pushes in then pull on the tubing. Screen and gasket come out as one piece. If it just has the push to connect screen is in the filter. Flush the line then taste the water before reconnecting. Box stores and on line sell water filter set. Come with from two to four filters on a bracket with different elements for taste. Just a sample

the water line in the back of the fridge is a 1/4 turn shutoff and connect to the pes they put in the house. before i put the filter in the fridge instruction said to run about 5 gallons of water thru the system using the water dispencer in the door. that to some time. i out a pc of pipe in the stream and held the button until the pail filled. thans i had to dump the ice bucket in the door for a week.

i did tast the water and it seemed ok. i'm not a plain water drinker, so i put the filter in. so all seemed ok. then yesterday i get the change filter warning so i just popped the filter out as i did have water before i put it in and reset the error. then later in the day i got some ice water and it tasted like for lack of words kerosene. so i put the old filter back in.

i find it hard to believe that just by taking the filter out the water go so bad tasting as the kitchen sink water is the same water and it tastes fine. so something inside the fridge system at the filter is causing that. now i may have to again flush 5 gallons out to get it to tade good again. they want 50$ for the filters and on my old fridge i used a bypass unit. so i did not need to get filter every few months. now i may have to take the old filter apart gut it and glue it back and put it back in to keep that taste away.

i cpuld install a filter system like you show but changing them would mean going into the CS and way down to the other end on the house to get to the fridge water line. but again why would a filter make the water taste different going to and out of a fridge? i do have a filter unit but in the old house i never had to use it.

this is the filter. now i just took it out and sucked a bit of water thru the ports and the one on the right side has the bad taste and the left one is ok looking at the right photo and the pin between the ports. so that taste must be coming from something between the water valve in the wall and that port. i do not know if this is a carbon filter or just a woven one. but my guess is a carbon filter being it it may be the plastic tubing connecting the fridge. the store installed it so maybe they use a plastic line that puts the taste in there so they can sell filters.

Amazon has a filter for $15 that is a knock off has good ratings. Filter material is a carbon block. Take mirror and flash lite inspect the water spout see if it's clean.

I cannot relate to that to my taste experience.

Too much chlorine? The opposite: no chlorine, so mold growth because you have not sanitized your plumbing? Silt particles? Iron taste? H2S in the water?

i do not think the port is dirty as you can see the filter ports in the photo. i'm leaning on either the line from the wall shutoff to the fridge is the wrong line and adding the taste or there is something in that area the filter plugs into that puts the taste in so that you just get filter because you think that is the reason the water is bad tasting. the water line to the fridge is a tee fitting next to the kitchen sink that i had to put in because the plumbers forgot and left. thanks

Taste is too personal. You need something you can measure.
now sure what your saying. by personal taste, anyway i have new filter in the mail and i will see if there is actually a bypass plug that works for this fridge. if not i will take the old filter and make a bypass out of that and test it. the worst case is it will not work. thanks
