I haven't found an answer to this problem although it's happening more frequently. Back to back toilets on the 2nd floor worked OK with 1980 units. They were upgraded to TOTO Drake 1.6 and now a flush empty's the adjacent toilet bowel. I think this is going to cause problems with sewer gas and it's a rental property. There isn't any attic (flat roof). I believe the vent is 2" and was checked by a local plumber. Is there any reasonable solution without tearing the wall out.

Did you happen to read the installation manual from the toilet? It describes exactly this problem and the fix may be messy. The issue is that ALL newer toilets must create a faster flush to be able to clear things out with significantly less water. This means velocity is higher which means skipover to the opposite toilet if you do not have the right fitting in the wall. The fix is to tear things up and replace the fitting with the required one. This is not unique to any new toilet...they all will respond in a similar way.

Thanks for your response. I didn't do the install and suspected that something like that would be required. I needed someone in the trade who knew the correct solution.

The installation instructions for the Drake not only describe the fitting, they have a diagram. Follow the Toilet Review link to see this. It is called a "Tee-Wye" fitting.
