I am new to these forums and hope someone can help with a problem related to a Flotec water pump used to increase house water pressure from a well system.

The pump won't start on its own, it hums and generates smoke. I have replaced the starter capacitor and pressure switch already, neither of these helped. With the back of the pump removed and manually pressing the starter switch contacts together the pump starts and runs fine, however as soon as it is turned off again it won't restart, just hums/smokes until the copper contacts are manually pushed together.

What controls these contacts and what part is most likely at fault?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I suggest you post a picture of the place that you press which makes the pump run fine, but wide enough to show the rest.

Found this picture on the internet, it's better than one I could take and looks very similar to my pump. Manually pressing the copper contacts together (labelled Switch in the image) causes the pump to run fine until it is turned off.
