I'm on well water with 24 GPG hardness + 2 GPG for .5PPM iron. We're a family of 5 averaging 400 gallons per day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my math is coming out to roughly 73,000 grains.

26 GPG x 400 = 10,400 x 7 = 72,800 GPG. At 65% efficiency I would need a 112,000 GPG unit.

I was looking at the Fleck 9100 SXT 96,000 Dual Tank Softener on eBay for $2100.00.

Does anybody have any other recommendations or insight on Fleck softeners? I'm clueless when it comes to softeners and value all opinions.

TIA

0.5 ppm Iron X 5 = 2.5 gpg hardness equivalency + 24 gpg actual hardness = 26.5 gpg compensated hardness, rounded to 27 gpg.
400 gallons/day X 27 gpg = 10,800 grains per day

A softener containing 3 cubic feet resin (96,000 grains total capacity) will provide 72,000 grains usable capacity when regenerated with 24 lbs salt (8 lbs per ft3 of resin). Hardness Reduction Efficiency is then calculated as 72,000 / 24lbs = 3,000 gr/lb.

72,000 / 10,800 = 6.67 days - 1-day reserve capacity = 5-6 days estimated regeneration frequency for a single tank 3 ft3 softener.

Because a twin tank softener will not require Reserve Capacity to be subtracted and as the alternate resin tank will immediately provide softened water when the initial resin tank capacity becomes depleted and is being regenerated, then the estimated regeneration frequency for a twin tank softener will be 6.67 days per 3 ft3 tank.

If I went Fleck 9100, I would probably use 1.5 or 2.0 cuft of resin for each tank.

A single 16 x 52" could be used with 3.0 cu. ft. or 3.5 of resin.
A 16 x 65" (bigger than usual, and you would likely use a step-stool to program) 4.0 cu. ft. or 4.5

Would a single tank "110,000 grain" rated unit with Fleck 2510 controller work??? Shadetree trades person here with no Fleck experience.

FYI vanst777, I assume you know that Fleck is not a softener brand. Softeners are built with components and come with Fleck, Clack, or Autotrol valves (or an import valve). Also, the experts here warn to be extremely cautious of online vendors and the quality of their softener components.

EDIT: @ Reach4 below......usually it is recommended to run shorter intervals when managing iron, so if he can tweak his use to achieve close to every 7 days he should be doing well, correct??

We're a family of 5 averaging 400 gallons per day.
Usually people figure 60 gallons per person to day. I expect for most people it is less than 60 gallons per day, with lower gallons per flush and all.
Would a single tank "110,000 grain" rated unit with Fleck 2510 controller work???
So if I presume 300 gallons per day, and use a little more compensation for high-hardness setting H=30, I end up with 2.44 cubic ft of resin going about 9.22 days. So if I can presume 300 gallons per day, then yes.

At 400 gallons per day I calculate about 6.91 days, so that is a little shorter than is usually recommended, but not bad.
