When I was an apprentice, I asked what the difference was between a plumber and a fitter.

I was told a plumber was a ruptured fitter, as fitters normally worked on larger diameter piping

Never heard that expression. Back in the late 80s the fitters and plumbers merged into the fitters local.

Plumbers used to do sprinkler/ standpipe work, and fitters did gas piping. The unions made a deal, Union Local 638 would do heating and fire suppression, give gas work, as well as plumbing, to the plumbers' unions

Around the 1990s, there was a test with no practical for sprinkler/fire suppression, and plumbers could legally install up to 100 sprinkler heads

I decided to get my master fire suppression piping license so I could legally do both, including heating, boiler installations, and all types of service work.

Crazy how much more fire suppression insurance is as opposed to plumbing/gas work

Sprink fitters are a different union in st. louis we do help each other out when the work got slow. Licenced for backflow in st.loius city ,county and state and the east side ( Illinois) about 50 miles east. But never would check a sprinks backflow. Mainly the liability and the agreement between locals.

I have my "plumbers" do backflow testing and installations under the auspices of my master plumbing license, as long as they have a journeymen's card and passed state requirements.

I have a separate company doing commercial sprinkler work installations, repairs, etc. BUT no plumbing and no back flow testing for that it is plumbing

NY had plumbers, and Fitters unions 638 is the major fitters union and plumbers Local Union 1 is the NYC
