Although it is not advised, here’s my argument for using finish nails for wood fence planks. The planks will be cut from pallet wood, and because pallet wood splits so easily, I'm thinking 16 gage finish nails or 18 gauge crown staples may be a superior option, especially if glued.

I am totally unfamiliar with the comparative holding strength of pneumatic nailers so I could be way off here, a 16 gauge finish nail or 18 gauge narrow crown staple may not be strong enough.

Which would you go with 16 gauge finish nails 2" long or 18 gauge 1/4" narrow crown staples 1 1/2" long?

With Numax nailers so reasonably ($130 for finish & framing) I've decided I'll get both. I'll try the staples first but if the hold isn't satisfactory I'll use 2" ring shank. I just hope the pallet wood doesn't split
