Just got done replacing an oatey style brass shower drain that was leaking. Had hell of a time getting old one out. Ended up finding a simple method that worked easily, so thought I would share. I tried wrench, pounding, heating and it would not budge. Was just about to try cutting it out, and then remembered I have a hammer drill. Used the chisel tip on the hammer drill against the tabs on the underside ring to rotate it off. Surprised it came off easily using this method after sinking hours into other attempts. Hopefully this helps someone else. I. Sure there are risks doing it this way, but was less violent than my other attempts.
