Hello,

I am going to have an electric tanked hot water heater in my basement. I keep reading about the need for an "indirect waste pipe." I am not planning on plumbing my basement. Will I need to do a floor drain and then have a sewer ejector pump to carry this water (in the case of a leak or failure) up and out my overhead sewer system lateral?

I am on IPC code in Idaho.

Thanks in advance.

In most places, you can run the T&P outlet pipe down to within the specified distance of the floor. This can be problematic if it can't reach a suitable drain when the area is finished, but may not be as big a deal if it is an unfinished basement.

Note, when things fail, usually, the release is small, but there are situations where it could be open and a large flow is possible.

Hey, wait a minute.

This is awkward, but...
