Hi, first time poster, thanks for the great forum.

We are considering remodeling our unfinished basement, one key factor being whether it would be easy to add a bathroom / toilet. Here's a pic of our current drain. It's a 4 inch pipe (possibly from the 1920's) going through a 45 to the underground drain line (not sure what direction that line takes). We would possibly break up the existing cement slab (very thin cement over sand, 1 foot below exterior grade). How hard would it be to plumb a toilet into this line? It goes to the city sewer line 70' away.

If the pictured area is not suitable, would we be better off tapping into the drain line further downstream?

Thanks!

you'd need to know how deep the line runs under the slab, and what direction. Plus, you'd need to add a vent for at least the sink and tub/shower. That cap is a cleanout. If you can get it off, you may be able to see how deep the line goes before it turns. If it isn't very deep, you might be limited to a toilet with a pump, one example is made by SaniFlow.

The only connection you can make will be under the floor in the horizontal section of pipe going out of the building.
Commonly there will be a cleanout in the yard to the outside of the foundation wall that could be used to give you a good idea of the path of the pipe under the floor.

In any event, there is more to adding a bathroom down there, than just making a connection, (that may be the EASY part), and running some pipe. Since this is something that was not anticipated, there is probably not an accessible vent line for it.
