Good evening

Got a sand point well 1 1/4 21.5 feet deep ...water level at 14.5....johnson stainless 8 slot point. Works well but getting fine dust silt. I use filters for my drinking water at tap. Thinking about a new well with a casing same figures as above using a stainless screen ( don't know size) check valve at pump. Will a casing set up slow down silt given im not directly in sand? I dont want to use a footvalve because i cant drain it back for winter closing...any suggestions on a small screen given my water column is only 6 to 7 feet. Im using a 3/4 hp franklin shallow pump. I'll likely wash down a 6 inch casing slotted casing . Thanks

Have you attempted to develop the existing well by pumping it hard for several hours or even days, to pump out the silt and sand?

This is often best performed by maximizing the flow rate from the pump by locating the pump at the well head, and pumping the discharge into the surrounding yard/field until the water runs consistently clear.

If the well's recovery rate is low, you may need to shut down the pump once the well's water level drops so the pump begins to draw air, allowing sufficient time for the water level to recover, then repeating the process until achieving the intended result.

As was said, if you pump the well hard for quite a while the sand you are pumping will get lodged in the cracks and screen and will become a sand media filter. A new well with a finer screen could restrict flow. I would try to develop the well you have.

Thank you. The well is often bypassed out the window and run for an hour plus ita been years. We get silt ...many neighbors do...just wondering if going to a pvc cased well 21 feet dow the the silt will settle outside of casing because a point is directly in the sand and silt.

Silt has a meaning when filtering. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silt says
A more precise definition of silt used by geologists is that it is detrital particles with sizes between 1/256 and 1/16 mm (about 4 to 63 microns).
So if your material is indeed that small, a well with fine slots and small gravel may still have a problem.

If 20x4.5 inch cartridge filters clog too quickly, and your well can produce enough water for the backwash, you could use a backwashing filter to filter that out. Then the collected sediment gets backwashed out. That mechanical filtering may be combined with filtering for some other stuff, such as iron.

You could also consider getting some washable filter cartridges.

Thanks. I use a .3 micron at tap and its trapping the silt. But my spin down 500 mesh 24 microns does nothing thats how fine it is. I just wondering if a cased pvc well with a point in it will produce better water.

Out the window an hour is nothing. Run it wide open at low pressure for hours or days if the well can keep up and it will eventually clean up.

Thanks i will do that...question is shallow well better as a casing configuration or with a point directly in sand?
