After scouring the forum pages and reading all the great advice, I had my water softening company set up a stand pipe that drains into the clean out. The clean out is for a bathroom on the other side of the wall. It was the only option we had. Now I’m wondering if they were also supposed to put an AAV Vent for the additional PTrap for the stand pipe.

I actually just had a plumber come by to check and he said it was fine without a vent because there is already a vent stack for the clean out. But I’m still not convinced. Is he right??

We have been getting weird smells in our guest room that could not be recreated while plumber was here. Perhaps unrelated. However, Is the current set up creating an S trap and causing sewer gas back up or rapid dry out of the PTrap?

Here is a photo with stand pipe and PTrap connected to the clean out via sanitary tee. The pipe connected to the water softener drains into an air gap connected to the stand pipe.

Also #2 - with outdoor drains like this, is there a way to stop rodents or other pests from just climbing into your drainage pipes?

In summary -

  1. Does this stand pipe and PTrap connected to an outdoor clean out need an AAV Vent connected somewhere?
  2. With outdoor drains and open air gap draining, is there a way to stop things from climbing into drain?

Thank you.

I normally would add and AAV for venting, though with so little water coming down the standpipe I'm not so sure it's needed either.
Wire mesh around the top of the drain might help with rodents.

If it was done right there the path should be already vented in the wall. If you did that, then you should add the aav. You should have used a combo instead of that santee on its side to make the turn.
