So, I am installing a new dishwasher at my house. Pex line under the sink connected to old copper line, which is being replaced. But when I attempt to disconnect the copper sitting, the male threaded piece on the 1/4 stop also starts unthreading. Even though the 1/4 is off water begins flowing as that male threaded piece loosens. (So photo for better visual. And ignore the crescent wrench - the pex line is not affixed to the wall, so I needed a fulcrum when attempting the disconnect).

If I turn the house water off, can I somehow repair that male threaded piece so it doesn’t turn? I don’t have any pex gear and I am trying to do this on a budget. I realize the proper fix is replacing the entire 1/4 stop.

Thanks for any input. I love that Terry’s legacy continues to live on here.

I would try holding the piece marked it red with a locking pliers -- maybe curved. Then use the wrench to unscrew the brass piece.

I would turn the wrench on the vertical axis and push away. That puts the rotation toward the movable jaw.

Will you be able to overlap the body and the red-marked piece with a pliers jaw? Not sure.

Maybe you can find a pliers that have narrow-enough jaws where that will not be a necessity. Taking a measurement and looking at the store might be worthwhile.

I have liked Milwaukee brand. https://www.homedepot.com/s/locking pliers?NCNI-5

For some reason the brass nut wouldn't budge. At all. So it ended up breaking the fitting. Or perhaps better said: I ended up breaking the fitting. :) Interesting that the Uponor stop valve has an unscrew-able end. I'm just a DIY'er, but it seems like a bad design.

Anyway, I went out and bought the PEX A expansion tool. I'll guess repair this properly. Thanks!
