The middle knob is stuck on letting the water out of the shower head. I can no longer get the water to come out of the bottom facet to fill the tub. This is as far as I got in removing the hardware I cant get the plastic stem out. How do I proceed?

I removed the silver cover and tried to loosen the white stem but it did not budge. I'm not sure how to remove it. It seems to be broken on the inside because it just turns and turns.

So there is another screw holding it in place? Is that what you mean by nut?

A nut is a nut, a screw is a screw. A nut is not a screw and a screw is not a nut. A plumbing nut is not a walnut or even a peanut.

At the bottom of the plastic stem there is a nut. Use a wrench to open the nut.

So I was able to get it off. This is what came off. It was a whole piece and not just a nut. Then I carefully took out the plastic piece with turned out to be broken in two pieces. Can I just take the plastic stem into a hardware store to get a replacement?

Call it a whole piece or a nut, it is what had the hexagonal shape and held the thing together. The top piece is just a handle extension and you will reuse it on the new diverter. I doubt that anyone will have the diverter. Call 1-800-345-DELT and Delta will probably send you a new one.
