Hi everyone. I'm new here and somewhat new to diy home stuff. Figuring it out as I go.

My new house had a broken handle in one of the showers. I thought it was just missing the plastic cover at first so I went and bought a new one, but realized that the part of it that attaches to the handle is broken.

I've done a bit of research and found that these parts aren't all the same and vary a good amount from model to model.

Can anyone give me a better idea on how to replace this part and what part I need to replace it with? I'm not even sure how to take the broken one off.

Thank you!

Here is the one thats not broken. So these are single hot and cold handles. The cold one is broken.
One picture with the plastic handle still on and a couple with it off.

Thanks Marlinman! That definitely looks like the one.
So how do I take off the broken one? There doesn't seem to be a screw or anything in the hole and if I grab it with pliers and turn it just turns the faucet on.
Thanks again!

What you're looking at is the RP18627 extender which is held in place by the RP18136 sleeve. Removing the sleeve allows replacement of the RP1740 stem.
Replacing handles or the stems?

Yep, I'm seeing that now. So I will have to take off the RP18136 and then I'll be able to pull out the RP18627 and replace it? It appears that the extender is the only part broken, so I think that's all I need to replace.
I'm assuming I'll have to shut my water main off to do this, correct?

Thanks
