I am an experienced plumber but have very little experience with well systems. I want to learn about them so, here goes:
I have a customer who has a jet pump pulling from an old hand dug well about 40' from house and the water level in the well is roughly 25-35' below grade. It is a two pipe system. Yesterday a 1/2" copper line in the house froze and burst and now the pump runs continuously but will not begin pumping. I primed it repeatedly (6-10 gallons) and cannot get it to start picking up water. I think the pump has been running dry for the last 24 hrs and it makes more noise than I think it should.
I am a novice when it comes to well systems and really don't understand much about the two pipe systems. I came to the conclusion that I did everything that should have primed the pump so it needs a new pump but I am a little worried that what I don't understand about the two pipe system could be the culprit.

Thanks in advance for any help any of you can offer while I learn about this.

Maybe the other pipe froze too. The jet pump pumps water down one pipe, and the other pipe carries water up.

Or the jet nozzle in the assembly down the well could be clogged. It will usually pump a little water when this happens, it just won't build much pressure.

The pump running dry for 24 hrs ain't a good thing. I'd suspect that since everything was working fine before the line froze up, that the pump running dry has pooched the pump.
