If a pump costs $500 and there is a 10% chance of a ruinous failure over the life of the well then you should spend less than 10% of $500 = less than $50 on the failure prevention device.
For a 50% chance you should spend $250 or less.
That type switch is like $15-20 retail.

1 to 4 pump failures per year out of how many pumps "out there" that didn't fail each year?

How long is the life of a well?
I was only 1 guy out of maybe 3 dozen that serviced well pumps in my service area so I have no idea of how many pumps were there.

All the wells were 6" steel rock bore. I only saw one that rusted through and the hole was about 5' down in the exposed casing before it went in the ground outside of a basement wall in a cement root cellar with a dirt floor. The house was about 60 years old.

100 x $20/$500 = 4%, so even if there is a only a 4% or more chance of the pump being damaged the well owner should buy the switch.
Slam dunk.

But there is a 52% chance that the homeowner will not know how to reset it, so now we have a service call charge.

[calculated using dartboard and Ouigi board programs]

And if the well is deeper, you have the cost of the pump and pull and reset, and now the number is closer to 1500 or 2000$ ++. So then the pumpsaver meets your criteria especially considering that it senses short cycling also, unlike the switch.
