Connecting PVC Drain to Cast Iron Drain in Basement Floor

Hi Gang,

What's the right way to connect a PVC drain to a cast iron drain the basement floor? The current setup is shown in the attached pictures. The PVC "sits" inside the cast iron pipe with pipe dope packed in to seal and stabilize it. A toilet occupied this space once upon a time.

There must be a better way. Thoughts?

Hmmm...would a Fernco Compression Donut be the answer here?
